Tamil cinema bids goodbye to its ‘Captain’ : Remembering Vijayakanth

Indian politician and former actor, who was known by his stage name Vijayakanth passed away on December 28. Fondly called ‘Captain’, he was admitted to a private hospital on Thursday due to pneumonia. The hospital informed that Vijayakanth tested positive for Covid-19 and is on ventilator support.

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder Vijayakanth was 71 and his original name was Narayanan Vijayaraj Alagarswami. Before entering politics Vijayakanth was a successful actor, producer, and director. He played in 154 movies and is one of the most adored film personalities in the Tamil industry. Vijayakant's 100th film 'Captain Prabhakaran' was a massive hit. The film was released in 1991. It ran for more than 200 days, post which he got the sobriquet "Captain". Vijayakanth was one of very few Tamil actors to have acted only in Tamil films throughout his career. His films have mostly been dubbed into Telugu and Hindi. Throughout the 1990s, Vijayakanth excelled in versatile performances, even though he was more popular as an action hero including Pulan Visaranai.

Stakes go up for Vijay Deverakonda like never before

'Liger' is considered the most important film in Vijay Deverakonda's career. The film's success would have made him a pan-India star. Even filmmakers from other industries would have vied for his dates. His remuneration would have hit the Rs 40-Cr mark, if not more. Thanks to Puri Jagannadh, the film turned out to be a dud. In this context, 'Kushi' has become a high-stakes project for the talented Vijay. The consequences of its success will mean that his career once again starts looking bright. His career will start exuding the vibrancy of the 'Geetha Govindam' days. But the consequences of its failure will be catastrophic. Going by the trailer, 'Kushi' appears to have a fairly good story. Some resemblances to Mani Ratnam's 'Sakhi' are overblown. The mood and sensibilities of 'Kushi' appear to be different from 'Sakhi'. So, the audience won't do comparisons. 'Kannappa': Mohan Babu's biggest gamble doesn't inspire confidence

Mohan Babu is producing a magnum opus. Titled 'Kannappa – A True Epic Indian Tale', the film is touted to be an epic-scale pan-India movie featuring "distinguished" artists from across the country. For now, though, only two names have been announced: Vishnu Manchu and Nupur Sanon. Mohan Babu is bankrolling the "dream project" on 24 Frames Factory and AVA Entertainment. The budget is said to be upwards of Rs 100 Cr. If you thought someone who has delivered box-office hits down South is helming the project, you are wrong. Director Mukesh Kumar Singh is on board to wield the megaphone. He has previously made a couple of Hindi-language mythological and historical serials on TV. Paruchuri Gopalakrishna, Thota Prasad, Thotapalli Sainath, and Burra Sai Madhav have been chosen to write the devotional flick. Paruchuri reigned supreme once upon a time but he is hardly the writer you have to rely on today. Sainath is a veteran writer who was last associated with 'Baahubali: The Beginning' but his speculated contribution to that film was not significant. Sainath hasn't worked prominently on any major hit in the last many, many years. The same holds true for Thota Prasad. Burra Sai Madhav is the only writer who has a grip on contemporary trends. Considering these factors, 'Kannappa' comes across as a big gamble. Only a massive star cast can ensure grand openings for it.

'Salaar': Post-production works shifted to a village?

'Salaar' is slated to hit the cinemas on September 28. The film's promotions are non-existent so far. The buzz is that Hombale Films is planning to roll out promotions in the first week of September. The pan-India action drama, meanwhile, has got a new address as far as its post-production is concerned. It is reported that director Prashanth Neel is carrying out post-production works in collaboration with composer Ravi Basrur in a village in Karnataka. The shift has taken place to ensure utmost secrecy, the report says. It has been speculated that Prabhas and Prithviraj Sukumaran will be seen as estranged friends in 'Salaar'. The backdrop is said to be a conflict-ridden fictional town where Prabhas's character faces a moral dilemma. He is torn between his promise made to his mother and his loyalty to his friend. 'Salaar', co-starring Shruti Haasan, Sriya Reddy and Jagapathi Babu, is Prabhas' second release this year. 'Adipurush' was released on June 16.

Four re-releases coming up; Fans of Prabhas, PSPK gear up

Four new re-releases have been confirmed within a space of a month. On August 18, Prabhas' 'Yogi' (2007) will be released. Directed by VV Vinayak, the action drama had Nayanthara as the heroine. 'Orori Yogi' and 'Nee Illu Bangaram' from the movie were chartbusters from the Ramana Gogula-composed album. On the same date (Aug 18), there is another re-release in store. Dhanush's 'Raghuvaran B.Tech' (2014) will be released. The Telugu-dubbed Tamil movie co-stars Amala Paul, Saranya, Samuthirakani and others. '7/G Brindavan Colony' (2004) might hit the cinemas on August 25. Its final date is yet to be confirmed. On September 2, marking Pawan Kalyan's birthday, 'Gudumba Shankar' (2004) will be released. The film, directed by Veera Shankar, had music by Mani Sharma. Meera Jasmine and Asish Vidyarthi were its heroine and antagonist, respectively.

Producer doesn't rule out festival release of 'Ustaad Bhagat Singh'

'Ustaad Bhagat Singh' had a grand start earlier this year. However, its subsequent schedules have hit a roadblock due to Pawan Kalyan's political commitments. Its shoot is going to be recommenced soon. When is the film going to be finished and released? As per producer Naveen Yerneni, the plan is to release it for Sankranthi 2024. If that is not possible for whatever reason, the big-ticket release will happen in the early Summer of that year. By early Summer, the producer could mean late March of 2024. The producer not ruling out a Sankranthi release should make Power Star's fans delighted. With the screenplay written by K Dasharath and C Chandra Mohan as the contributing writer, 'UBS' has music by Devi Sri Prasad. Naga Chaitanya says NC23 Expedition in Srikakulam was a 'great start'

Fahadh Faasil's Bhanwar Singh is 'face of vengeance'

The makers of Allu Arjun's 'Pushpa 2' today unveiled a poster dedicated to Fahadh Faasil. The 'Maamannan' and 'Vikram' actor turns a year older today. Taking to social media, the official handles of 'Pushpa 2' described the star Malayalam hero as massively talented. "Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat Sir will be back on the big screens with vengeance (sic)," the post further said. Mythri Movie Makers shot a schedule involving Fahadh in May. Producers Naveen Yerneni and Ravi Shankar Y have retained music director Devi Sri Prasad, cinematographer Mireslow Kuba Brozek, production designers S Rama Krishna and N Monica, lyricist Chandrabose, and others. Co-starring Rashmika Mandanna, Dhanunjaya, Sunil and Anasuya Bharadwaj, 'Pushpa 2' is a pan-India release. So far, the official release date of 'Pushpa 2' hasn't been made official. Although Bunny Vas recently happened to say that it will be a December 2023 release, the date has been unofficially deferred. The sequel to 'Pushpa' will most probably be a Summer 2024 release.

SIIMA Awards: 'RRR', 'Sita Ramam', 'DJ Tillu', 'Karthikeya 2' bag multiple nominations

The 11th edition of the South Indian International Movie Awards, also known as the SIIMA Awards, will be held in Dubai this September (on 15th and 16th). A number of popular Telugu titles have garnered nominations in multiple categories. Best Actor in a Leading Role nominations are six in number. Jr NTR and Ram Charan for 'RRR', Dulquer Salmaan for 'Sita Ramam', Adivi Sesh for 'Major', Nikhil Siddhartha for 'Karthikeya 2', and Siddu Jonnalagadda for 'DJ Tillu' are the ones. 'RRR' is the leading movie in terms of the number of nominations (11). 'Sita Ramam' has received nominations in 10 categories. 'DJ Tillu' has been nominated in eight categories. Super-villain to confront super-hero in this high-concept movie : 'A Masterpiece'

'A Masterpiece' is the title of a Telugu-language super-hero movie directed by Suku Purvaj. Producer Kandregula Srikanth of Cinema Bandi Productions has admittedly mounted the film to meet international making standards. Aravind Krishna and Ashu Reddy are its lead pair. The sci-fi thriller went on the floors in January this year. The news is that the first-look poster of the film's super-villain character was unveiled today. Manish Gilada is essaying the coveted role. He is a super-villain because he has apparently defied death by being born on repeat. He took a re-birth in 1986 soon after he passed away. And then, in 2010, he made a stellar return, intensifying the mystery aspect. Is his death imminent at the hands of the super-hero? Or, is he immortal? The stunts have been composed by Raj Kumar Gangaputra. Aashirwad is setting the songs to tune. Shivaram Charan is its director of photography. Satish Vegesna's 'Katha Keli' looks promising: Dil Raju

'Shatamanam Bhavathi' director Satish Vegesna is back with a new film titled 'Katha Keli'. Produced by the director himself, the film's teaser is out. The film's story is centered on a ghost and the perspective from which it tells the story. On the face of it, the horror drama is dominated by female characters and is a collection of stories rather than a single story. Tropes like a haunted house and troubled women are expected.
